Quorn: 5 Healthy & Delicious Meat-Free Meals (includes giveaway for Quorn vouchers)

I’m delighted to be working with Quorn* this week, the market leader for healthy and meat-free alternatives, and they’ve kindly invited my family to try some of their products and recipes.

They’ve also offered to give away 3 vouchers for one of you lucky dudes/dudettes to try some Quorn products yourself and please see the Rafflecopter further down this post to place your entries.

Quorn - 5 Healthy & Delicious Meat-Free Meals

So, excited and eager to get started, I had a look at their website (which is brilliant by the way, so many recipes to try) and I’ve chosen two tea-time meals – Quorn Pieces Laksa and Quorn Mince Sardinia Bake, one lunch-time meal – Quorn Meat Free Pepperoni Style Slices Layered Tortilla Stack, one breakfast – a vegetarian twist on the full english made with Quorn Sausages and lastly, one quick convenience meal – Quorn Cheese and Leek Escalopes.

As Mike and I are on a ‘healthy kick’ I jumped at the chance to get involved with Quorn and I’ve really enjoyed trying some of their recipes. As I mentioned before, there’s so many to choose from so it was difficult to pick just a few! Aside from tasting (actually) very nice, the great thing about Quorn is that it’s a nutritionally healthy protein source (it’s made with mycoprotein, a meat-free protein common to all Quorn products) which can help to maintain normal bone and muscle mass but, unlike some other forms of protein, is very low in saturated fat which is a big ‘YES’ for us, I always check this before anything else when reading food labels. Quorn is also naturally high in dietary fibre and low in calories so it’s perfect for us and anybody else trying to eat better and possibly shed a few pounds!

So, this week I didn’t buy any meat at all and tried my hand at these tasty-looking meal ideas. My only problem would be convincing the ‘meat mad’ hubby-to-be that Quorn was just as good…(there’s a joke that he sees all animals as ‘walking meat’. I say ‘Lily, there’s a cow, moo, moo!’ and he goes ‘Look Lily, a walking burger…!!!) Easier said that done I think, I’ve got a challenge on my hands! 😉

QUORN PIECES LAKSA

This recipe was incredibly straightforward consisting of only a few steps and as there wasn’t much time between Lily going to bed and Mike leaving for work, this was exactly what I needed. All I did was gently fry the chilli, garlic, ginger and spices, chuck in the chicken pieces for a minute and then pile everything else in to the pan and let it simmer for 5 – 10 minutes. Easy peasy! 😉

I must say that I was very happy with how tasty this turned out to be, it was absolutely gorgeous. I hadn’t told Mike that I was going to be using Quorn so he had no idea that he wasn’t eating real chicken until he’d mopped up his bowl and I let it slip. The Quorn pieces were so succulent and tender, if I hadn’t of cooked it myself I would’ve been fooled too! It wasn’t what I had expected as a meat-lover and I was pleasantly surprised.

In my opinion, the recipe provided for a mild to medium heat which was perfect for us but this could be adjusted by adding less/more of the spices to suit your tastes.

Absolutely full of flavor, this is a new favourite of ours 🙂

The man said “Huh, it’s actually really tasty and filling, I’m impressed, what are you cooking next?”

These didn’t turn out *exactly* as I had expected! As you can see, some of the contents of the tortillas overspilled and I found it difficult to keep the stacks looking nice and neat. As per the instructions, I bought ‘small’ tortillas for this recipe but if I were you, I would go for medium instead just to be on the safe side. If mine had been slightly bigger, I think these would have turned out beautifully. Another very simple recipe for a healthy, tasty and filling meal. We had these for lunch today and neither of us even thought about snacking this afternoon!

The man said “You know what I’m like about pepperoni – it’s one of my favourite foods – so whilst this is nice, it just doesn’t compare but I would eat this again and I like the creative recipe idea'”

QUORN MEAT FREE CHEESE & LEAK ESCALOPES

Quorn Cheese and Leak Escalopes - Close Up

Like all busy Mums, some days there just isn’t time to follow a recipe and cook a meal from scratch! Luckily, Quorn have a range of quicker convenience foods including ready meals and ‘cook and go’ foods such as these tasty cheese and leek escalopes. I popped them on a baking tray in the oven for 15 minutes and viola, they were ready to go. Whilst they were cooking, I pan fried courgette batons in butter with some spring onions, cooked my tinned new potatoes on the hob for 4-5 minutes and when they were done, I threw a knob of butter in to the pan and seasoned with a salt, chilli and garlic grinder. To finish off this whiz of a dish, I spooned some cottage cheese on the side of the plate, mmmmm!

Both cheese and leaks are two of my most-loved foods so I was pleased to see that Quorn make these yummy escalopes. The coating is gorgeous (so crispy) and the inside is delicious, it felt like I was eating comfort food.

The man said ‘These are amazing and again, I’m completely full up for once! I’m going to put these on the shopping list for next time’

On Michael’s day off, we love having a cooked breakfast as a treat and we always have sausages! These beauts took less than 10 minutes to cook sizzling away in a frying pan with the red onion, mushrooms and tomato and the man was very pleased – he even said that he would happily eat them over normal sausages! I almost fell over!

I think this is probably the healthiest cooked breakfast we’ve ever had and we both preferred it 🙂

As lovers of italian food, this with the highlight of the week’s food for both of us and I’m not ashamed to say that we both had seconds (I made enough for 4 people!)

Like all of the recipes, this was very easy to follow and it made a beautiful and rich dish. It went down very well with a nice bottle of wine and would be perfect for date night or as a nutritious family meal.

We both commented on the texture of the mince, how it felt meaty and robust and Mike pointed out that if you’re on a budget, you can sometimes end up with grizzle in bog standard supermarket meat (we’ve had this once or twice, it completely ruins an otherwise good meal) but there was no risk of that with the Quorn mince.

This is another new favourite and I’ll be making this again for us next week at Mike’s request.

I’ve spoken to a few friends and family members about my experiences with Quorn this week and one query that kept on popping up when I was recommending the products was whether they would like and get on with the taste of Quorn. Well, from what we’ve found this week, most Quorn products really do have the taste, texture and appearance of meat and I’ve found that they easily absorb the flavours of my cooking ingredients to blend in well and make some truly delicious grub.

Whilst shopping this week, I noticed that Quorn is not only much cheaper than the standard cuts/packs of meat that we’d usually use to make meals but they also carry longer use-by dates so I was able to stock up at the beginning of the week and not have to worry about which product I would use first or when the dates would run out.

I was disappointed, however, to find that despite visiting several supermarkets, there were some items from the Quorn range that I just couldn’t locate, in particular the Quorn Meat Free Swedish-Style Balls – I’d quite fancied having a go at the Bocconcini and Basil Pizza or the Mushroom Stroganoff, both sounded amazing! Somebody please ask the ‘big four’ supermarkets to increase their product ranges? Please and thank-you!

I’m pleased to say that we’re definitely converted and can’t wait to try out some of Quorn’s other meat-free products. I’m currently stalking their website and writing meal plans for the next few weeks!

I’ve never tried it before but I’m always looking for meat substitutes as whilst we love meat it’s not just financially possibly or good for us to be eating it every day.

    • August 26, 2015 / 11:19 AM

No, meat can be really expensive can’t it? And it goes off quite quickly!
That’s one of the things that’s great about Quorn – long dates and cheaper to buy 🙂
I would definitely recommend that you try it, it is the best meat alternative that I’ve come across, let me know what you think of it?
