Review: Updated vegan menu at Handmade Burger Company

Good morning sugarplums,

Today I’m here to show off the absolutely beautiful vegan food that Alexandra {I’m Every Mum} and I stuffed our faces with over at our local Handmade Burger Company restaurant a couple of weeks ago.

You might remember that Mike and I were lucky enough to be invited over back in January but since then they’ve added two new vegan burgers to the menu and they’ve invested in some vegan ice-cream to jazz up the desserts and the soya milkshakes.

I’ll be honest with you – even if I am slightly embarrassed as to how piggy I was.

This is what they graced our table with after the super-friendly manager was kind enough to share his recommendations…

Handmade Burger Company - Full Meal For Two

You could have rolled me out of the door after we’d finished. What a feast indeed.

We didn’t have a dessert in the end but only because we just couldn’t fit anything else in! We were stuffed.

You can view the menu for yourself here and Alexandra and I chose the following dishes to gobble up whilst chatting away about Flight of the Conchords and how she’s gotten me singing along to Lemonade {Queen B} even though I’m a huge heavy metal fan…

The highlight of my meal was definitely the veg-mex burger. It’s one of the newbies so I was keen to give it a go and the spicy kick of the handmade Mexican salsa and jalapenos sounded awesome (and it was!)

I’m also a big avocado fan and I thought it would do well to cool everything down and balance out the heat from the other ingredients.

It was pure perfection – the best veggie burger I’ve ever had. Fact.

Last time we visited, I had the seasoned fries with rosemary salt so this time I opted for the peri-peri flavouring instead.

I also had a teeny grumble about how well the chips had been covered in my previous review but this time it was completely different with every available space coated in the tangy red dust of spicy seasoning.

The chips were nice and chunky and tasted gorgeous with a crisp coating and a soft, melt-in-the-mouth potato filling in the middle. Just right and very filling!

Did I use the word ‘divine’ to describe my milkshake last time? 😉

Maybe I thought it was too posh but if I didn’t, I bloody well should have because it was just that. Honestly, so yum.

Like the burger, I would go so far as to say it’s the best milkshake that’s ever touched my lips.

I would go just for a milkshake if I didn’t fancy a meal. It was truly that good. If you go yourself, I highly recommend the butterscotch with soya. It is to die for! Totally amazing.

There’s not much you can say about gherkins really is there? You either love them or hate them but they were a welcome addition to the meal together with the veg skewers which we enjoyed last time as well.

Handmade Burger Company - Veg Skewers

I scarfed most of them (poor Alex!) as the mushrooms were gorgeously chargrilled but still succulent and the peppers crunchy and completely moreish. The skewers came with a choice of dip and we had the sweet chilli which was delicious.

You can pop over to Alexandra’s blog to see what she thought of her meal as well. I think she even has a cheeky vlog to share with you 😉

I don’t think I touched very much on pricing last time so here’s a run down of what we ordered:-

Veg-Mex Burger – £7.85

Thai Vegetable Burger – £7.95

Peri-Peri Chips – £3.45

Sweet Potato Fries – £3.50

Shakes – £4.25 each (£8.50)

Gherkins – £1.65

Skewers  – £3.45

TOTAL = £36.35

For a meal for two people, Mike and I usually expect to pay around the £40.00 mark so this has come in under that (yay!) with reasonable prices and generous portions.

As our eyes were too big for our tummys, we were offered a box to take the extra food home in which Alexandra very kindly pointed in my direction so I could share some chips and veg with Mike when I got back. Isn’t she lovely?

We had a wonderful meal and the service was fabulous. Such a friendly bunch and very helpful.

The only thing I would say to the company is to advertise on the menu that they can make adjustments to how they prepare some of the vegetarian burgers to make them fully vegan if desired and that they’re now stocking vegan ice-cream for afterwards.

If I hadn’t of known and I was looking at the menu as somebody following a vegan lifestyle I would just presume that I wouldn’t be able to have any pudding! *sobs*

Lastly, just a quick reminder from last time, all foods marked as vegan on the menu are registered with The Vegan Society.

Have you been to the Handmade Burger Company before for a meal?

What would you order from the menu?

Great review Lucy. It really was so yummy. Especially how you would never know that the milkshakes were vegan. I wouldn’t usually have a milkshake with a meal but they really cooled your mouth well with all the spicy mixtures we had on our plates. Thanks for inviting me chica xxx

Oh wow, wow, wow I need to visit one of these places. James is Vegan now and I’m veggie and finding places to eat is such a struggle! The menu has lots of variety which is great it’s not just one option. There isn’t one near us really we would have to go to Wembley but it might be worth the trip xx
