You might remember that I started my journey to a more conscious lifestyle around this time last year with my first attempt at Veganuary – an initiative that encourages people to try vegan for a month – proving successful and an overhaul of my make-up, bathing and cleaning products making permanent switches to cruelty-free brands and shops.
I’ve also started to think about where the rest of our things are coming from, especially the stuff I spend most of our money on i.e. baby clothes and toys, which led to the discovery of one of my favourite online stores, Babi Pur (yes I’m a fellow hangout member – join here! – if you don’t know what that is, to quote Peppa Pig ‘pssst secret club!’) and lots of other ethical brands and shops as shown in my Ethical Christmas Gift Guide earlier this month.
I didn’t stick to being vegan, much to my disappointment at my own lack of willpower, but we did stay vegetarian for a few months before gradually letting that fizzle out as well. Again, that was a mixture of temptations at every turn, lack of organisation and a difficult year for us money-wise with the blog and my freelance work just starting to take off.
Luckily, the ‘big’ shops seem to have cottoned on that more and more people are considering a vegan lifestyle and I’m looking forward to stocking up on my free-from goodies alongside the normal food shop for Mike and Lily and I might do a little feature on which supermarket I’ve found ‘does vegan best’ throughout the month if you’d be interested in that sort of thing?
We were also invited to try some vegan-friendly restaurants throughout 2016 enjoying some wonderful meals at Handmade Burger Company and Yo Sushi! Again, I’m excited to see where else will properly cater to a vegan diet this year and I’ll be sure to keep you all updated.
So I’m back this year to give it another go and I’ll be honest, I’ll be happy if I can just get through the month again and then I can see how I feel and *hopefully* I’ll be in the right mindset to carry on.
I’ve got a feeling about 2017 though (I think lots of us have, 2016 was such a pile of rubbish wasn’t it?)
I think I’ve finally hit the right stages in my life where I’m ready to make the changes I need to, take ownership of my own decisions, opinions and life choices and be a lot more ‘switched on’ rather than just trying to make it through.
I’d be really grateful for any support and encouragement you can throw my way throughout the month and if you’d like to see how I’m getting on you can follow my Veganuary journey for 2017 over on my social media channels:
