Download Festival 2016: My Top 5 Bands

Have you heard of Download Festival? Rightfully deemed the ‘spiritual home of rock’, it’s the country’s leading rock and heavy metal festival and takes place every summer at Donington Park, Derby.

Download Festival 2016 - My Top 5 Bands

We went for the first time a few years ago and instantly felt at home as the atmosphere is completely amazing. You can truly be yourself and the mood is so relaxed and carefree, it’s wonderful.

We’ve been every year since (we even went last year although just for the day as Lily was only a few months old – we couldn’t miss Slipknot though!) and it’s become our annual pilgrimage and mini-holiday.

It means so much to us and something that we look forward to all year round so much that Mike even has the Download Dog tattooed on his leg and he adds a new tally mark each year. Here it is freshly inked a few years ago…

Download Dog Tattoo

MarperArt Tattoos did the work for him in their rolling bright-yellow studio dubbed ‘The Wasp’s Nest’. I was supposed to have a heartagram tattooed but they couldn’t fit us both in as they’d overran with another festival-goer earlier in the day. It’s lucky I didn’t really as we found out a few days later that I was pregnant with Lily!

In the run up to #DL2016 which takes place over the second weekend in June (10th – 12th) I’ll be publishing a small selection of posts about the festival including what I’ll be packing to take with us, my style wishlist for the weekend and, more importantly, what bands I just can’t wait to see this year.

There’s tons of bands that I don’t know well or that I haven’t even heard of this year so I’ll be taking the opportunity to discover some of the newer bands over the coming weeks. What I really need is one of these wireless speaker systems that I can connect up to my phone/spotify and rock out to whilst I try to get the housework done! That would be fab! 😉

So, I’ve had a little think and narrowed down my top five bands from this year’s line-up…

Rammstein Gig

I’ve always loved Rammstein and they’re one of my favourite bands in the entire world – even though I have to look up what they’re saying as I don’t speak German fluently!

We’ve only been lucky enough to see them live already back at Download Festival in 2013. We were at the barrier right at the front and as they go heavy on the pyrotechnics (the band’s lead singer, Till Lindermann, is actually certified nowadays as they’ve had some hiccups in the past, oops!) we were nice and toasty warm 😉 It was such an amazing night!

This year, Rammstein will be headlining the main stage on Friday night so it’ll be an awesome way to kick off #DL2016.

Favourite Songs – Ich Tu Dir Weh, Mein Teil, Mein Land, Du Hast

Chino Moreno - Deftones

I only discovered my love for Deftones fairly recently and I am just completely hooked on their deep, grunge sound. I feel like I can really lose myself in their music and I can’t believe it’s taken me so long to get round to listening to them properly, where have I been all of this time?!

I’ve seen them twice but the first year I didn’t really know too much about them and the second year I was in the early stages of pregnancy at Sonisphere and spent most of my time throwing up, eeek!

Deftones will be opening for Black Sabbath this year at the main stage on Saturday evening. I can’t wait! 🙂

Favourite Songs – Digital Bath, Back To School (Mini Maggit)

Disturbed Gig

I was practically brought up on Disturbed with my Mum blasting out their early albums and rattling the walls of our house as I was growing up (yes, my Mum is and always has been the definition of ‘cool’) 😉 She even had Dave Draiman as her screensaver for years!

I know most of their songs word-for-word and I definitely want to be somewhere near the front for this one (near or in the pits!) where I can cut loose and really feel the full force of their music. It’s going to be one to remember I think!

Disturbed play the main stage on Sunday before Nightwish and Iron Maiden.

Favourite Songs – Down With The Sickness, The Game, Remember

The first time I saw Korn live was at a really intimate gig about 5 or 6 years ago at the Manchester Apollo. It was a night I’ll always remember and it was the first show that Mike and I went to together which made it super special for us both.

Again, we were right at the front and the energy was crazy, it was such a wonderful night. They were absolutely fantastic and I really wish I could go back and have the experience again.

Korn open for Rammstein at the main stage on Friday.

Favourite Songs – Falling Away From Me, Coming Undone, Let The Guilt Go

Black Sabbath

If I had a bucket list of bands to see before I leave this world, Black Sabbath would be on there for sure…I mean, how could they not?! They are the founding fathers of heavy metal.

I think I’ll do everything black that day. Black clothes, black boots, black beer (oooh Guinness!)

It’s going to be a good’un!

Black Sabbath are headlining the main stage on Saturday.

Favourite Songs – War Pigs, Iron Man

Have I inspired you to get yourself a ticket for this year yet?

We’ll be there for the whole weekend (don’t ask me how I’m feeling about being away from Lily for a couple of days, I can’t even think about it right now! 🙁 ) so if you do fancy it make sure you say ‘hi!’ if you see me!

Is your favourite band playing this year?

Ah I am so jealous!! I went to every download since it began in 2003 until 08, then 09-12 but I haven’t been since. I actually announced my pregnancy to one of my best friends with a sorry I can’t make it this year because I’ll be 8 months pregnant!

This years lineup is so good. You’ve got some great choices of bands there. I’m gutted to miss out on Korn and Deftones.

    • February 27, 2016 / 11:25 PM

That’s a GREAT way to announce a pregnancy!!!
I went to Sonisphere at around 8 weeks pregnant and it just wasn’t the same (obviously!). I was so tired, sick and unwell at that stage, I can’t imagine going at 8 months and of course it wouldn’t be safe either incase baby came early or you got knocked around by anybody not being careful.
The line-up this year is fabulous but I don’t know how I am going to be without my little girl for those few days! 🙁
Maybe I’ll see you there sometime in the next few years? We should definitely meet up for a quick drink X

Do you know what, I’ve never been to a festival! Sad much? This sounds awesome

    • February 28, 2016 / 3:06 PM

That’s not sad at all but I would definitely recommend it if you ever get the chance 🙂 x

    • February 28, 2016 / 3:07 PM

Thank you. I’m sure they’ll be amazing, some of my fav bands x

  3. February 28, 2016 / 8:40 AM

Argh I’m so jealous!!! I went in 2010 so have seen Sabbath and it was a dream come true to see AC/DC too. Missed ’11 because I was broke, went in ’12, missed ’13 because we were getting married and ’14 because I was 37 weeks pregnant, last year we went to see Foo Fighters instead and this year we’ll have a 6 week old. Next year we’ll be back haha Have an amazing time, I’m so, so jealous!xx

    • February 28, 2016 / 5:18 PM

Aw I would have loved to have seen AC/DC, we didn’t go that year unfortunately 🙁
Yes, definitely come next year and we will have to meet up and say hello!

  4. February 28, 2016 / 12:37 PM

This looks amazing its sad to say I’ve never even been to a proper festival but would love to!

    • February 28, 2016 / 5:18 PM

Oooh do it, do it, do, it! It will change your life, so relaxed and so much fun 🙂 X

  5. February 28, 2016 / 3:27 PM

So glad for more download festival love. I’ve been every year since about 2009 and it’s always such a relaxed atmosphere and one of the most fun festivals I’ve been to. I can’t decide who I want to see most this year. Rammstein were amazing last time just for the theatrics so they should be good. Glassjaw, Bury Tomorrow and Billy Talent are probably the ones I’m most looking forward to x

    • February 28, 2016 / 5:17 PM

I’m looking forward to Bury Tomorrow as well. So many great bands this year! Are you doing the 3 or the 5 days? We usually do the 5 but as we have Lily now we’re just doing the shorter weekend X

  6. February 28, 2016 / 4:16 PM

Download is the festival I would love to go to if I was able to go to one – they always seem to have such amazing people preforming. x

    • February 28, 2016 / 5:15 PM

Aw it is always fabulous! They have a quiet camping area and places like that so I would definitely recommend if you could ever get there? X

  7. February 28, 2016 / 5:48 PM

I’ve never really been to a festival (other than a small 2000 people one) but that’s personal choice. I’m glad I’ve been able to see what you get up to though! Looks amazing! x

    • February 28, 2016 / 6:57 PM

It is so much fun! I’ve been to a few small ones too, I like that they’re intimate and not too crowded x

  8. February 28, 2016 / 7:12 PM

I LOVE a good festival. Download is probably a little heavy for my tastes but I’ve been to Leeds loads of times. It’s certainly something I miss and I’m looking forward to being able to take the kids to festivals when they are older!

    • February 28, 2016 / 8:15 PM

Ah we’ve done Leeds a few times as well and love how diverse it is, so much fun (but Download still has my heart!) X

  9. February 28, 2016 / 10:17 PM

oh wow looks and sounds amazing no wonder my 17 year old wants to go next year and how can I talk her out of it as I would go if I could not sure she would want me cramping her style with her friends mind

    • February 29, 2016 / 8:18 AM

Haha I’m sure she would be looked after if she did go – everyone looks out for each other! Saying that I’m 24 and I’m bringing my Mum this year for the first time – she’s wanted to go for years so I said why not? 😉 x

  10. February 28, 2016 / 10:46 PM

Black Sabbath are rock royalty. Like you say, how could you not like them, and Ozzy!
I’ve never been to Download, but I’d like to.

    • February 29, 2016 / 8:19 AM

Aw I would highly recommend it if you ever get the chance to, it’s an awesome experience! X

  11. February 29, 2016 / 10:09 AM

I love Rammstein. I saw the F1 museum at Donington Park and I knew they have different events, but I had no idea there is a rock concert. It sounds amazing, I will have a look on their website. x

    • March 2, 2016 / 9:30 PM

It is totally awesome, I hope you can go one day, it’s fantastic! X

  12. February 29, 2016 / 11:47 AM

I’ve never been to a festival before, not sure Download is my thing though!

    • March 2, 2016 / 9:29 PM

Aww fair enough but I would definitely recommend the whole experience overall whether it be heavy metal, pop or whatever you’re in too! So relaxed and the atmosphere is usually fab x

  13. February 29, 2016 / 7:45 PM

I’ve never been to a proper festival but it’s always something I’ve wanted to experience! I hope you have a fab time! x

  14. March 1, 2016 / 5:22 AM

Never been but have many friends who have. I’d love to go one year and its only just down the road.

    • March 2, 2016 / 9:25 PM

Ah that’s good you wouldn’t need to tent up then if you didn’t want to (but I would – that’s half the fun!) xx

  15. March 1, 2016 / 8:29 AM

I grew up listening to ‘old rock’ bands with my dad. My older brother then started listening to all of these bands so I’m familiar with everyone! People wouldn’t expect it when they look at me 😉

    • March 2, 2016 / 9:26 PM

Haha no I wouldn’t have thought it myself Alex That’s fab, I was grew up listening to the same stuff with my Mum x

  16. March 1, 2016 / 8:36 AM

I’ve never been to a festival. They look so much fun but I think I’d be scared to be trampled on (I’m so small)

    • March 2, 2016 / 9:27 PM

Aw you’d be OK a bit further back instead of right at the front. There’s loads of room back there, I even went when I was 8 weeks pregnant once and just stayed back away from the crowds x

  17. March 1, 2016 / 10:51 AM

I am not so much of a heavy metal girl but the thought of a festival does really appeal to me, I’m doing V this year and cannot wait! xx

    • March 2, 2016 / 9:30 PM

Oooh have a fantastic time, I’ve not looked at the line-up I will have to check who’s on x

  18. March 3, 2016 / 3:33 PM

We used to go to lots of Festivals when were we younger, but we never went to Download, probably a bit too heavy for me, but I used to love Korn. Hope you have fun huni. Thanks for linking up to #TheList x

    • March 4, 2016 / 7:39 AM

Thanks 🙂 Ooh that’s fantastic, we also used to go to quite a few (still try to!) and you end up having the most amazing summer every year! X

  19. March 7, 2016 / 11:35 AM

I love a good festival, but not sure Download would be my cup of tea. A bit too heavy for me I think, I’m a bit more mainstream / commercial in my music. Sounds ace though! x

    • March 7, 2016 / 7:27 PM

Fair enough! 😉 I love festivals too, such a great experience x
