When you think about adopting a vegan lifestyle, your first thought will naturally be — ‘what the hell am I going to eat everyday?’ As a society, a ‘decent meal’ isn’t deemed as such without some elements of meat, carbs and veggies — the staples — even though research has proven that you can get everything you need from a plant-based diet. So you’re initially caught up in a frenzy researching recipes, milk alternatives* (because what is life without tea?) and meal plans before you realise that it extends beyond what’s on your plate to everything from what’s in your bathroom and cleaning cupboard to what’s on your back. It is a lifestyle and thus, every section of your life is overhauled.
*Let me give you a heads up. Sweetened soya milk in your tea, Oatly Barista everywhere else (especially for frothy coffee!) — the whole Oatly Barista hype is justified, I promise!
I have been cruelty-free when it comes to the products I buy for 2 years but, regrettably, I haven’t been as ethical when it comes to what’s on the end of my fork (until now). It’s worth noting, however, that just because a product is cruelty-free, it won’t be automatically vegan. Just because it’s not been tested on animals doesn’t mean it doesn’t contain animal-derived ingredients. In the beauty industry, beeswax is probably your most popular contender. Natural though it may be, it’s not vegan. You can also forget about anything with carmine (a dye collected from crushed bettles), lanolin, collagen and retinol to name just a few of the common animal-derived ingredients you might read on the back of your favourite beauty products. It’s a little bit of a minefield isn’t it?
That’s why I find shopping so much easier when dealing with brands like Green People because all of their vegan products are clearly marked as such and approved by The Vegan Society. They very kindly offered to send across one of their Divine Duo sets to review for Veganuary and I’ve been using the orange blossom cleanser and moisturiser religiously for a few weeks. They’ve also been really lovely and put aside another set as a giveaway prize for one of my lucky readers (see giveaway details below).
Let’s start with my favourite thing about these products — the absolutely gorgeous orange blossom scent (some might call it ‘divine’?) You see, recently, whenever Michael leans in to kiss me, he whispers in my ear that my face smells ‘beautiful’ and naturally, my cheeks flush red. It’s such a lovely thing to hear and it puts a smile on my face for the rest of the day. The scent is light, fresh and natural and, for the first time in years, I’ve been sticking to my skincare routine because it’s no longer a chore. Instead, it’s an indulgence, an act of self-care, some extra joy in my day. With these products, I feel comfortable not wearing any make-up if I don’t feel like it or don’t have the time and that’s a big deal, isn’t it? They are confidence in bottles.

Funnily enough, Michael isn’t the only one to be dishing out the kind words and compliments. Family and friends have also commented on my ‘healthy, glowing skin’ and in return, I’m recommending these products to anybody I can, especially those who are looking to switch to vegan, cruelty-free alternatives with certified organic ingredients.
To use the cleanser, I simply apply to my face taking some time to massage the lotion into problem areas before washing it away with warm water. I pat my face dry with a hand towel and move on to the moisturiser using just a small pump for each side of my face. It feels almost instantly hydrating and has been my saviour tackling the dry skin and redness I suffer from in the winter months.

In the evenings, I repeat the same routine with the cleanser removing the bulk of any make-up I’ve been wearing that day and I use a cloth face wipe to really work it around my eye area to remove the last of any mascara and eyeshadow. When I’ve finished, my face feels squeaky clean and smooth. Again, I apply the moisturiser afterwards and it’s a perfect consistency, soaking in quickly as well.
Lastly, Green People have published a useful post explaining why they use plastic packaging for their products which may be of interest to you if, like us, you’re trying to be environmentally-friendly.
